Public school teaching and service credentials in the State of California are regulated by the State Legislature and administered by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).
The following CSULB credential programs have been designed to meet current state requirements administered by the CCTC and are frequently reviewed and updated:
Single Subject credential
Multiple Subject credential
Specialist credential
Service credential
Designated subjects credentials
Although the Single Subject credential allows you to teach a specified subject at any grade level-preschool, kindergarten, grades 1 through 12 or adult-most teachers with a Single Subject credential teach classes in middle, junior high or senior high schools. CSULB offers CCTC-approved subject matter programs in Art, English, Foreign Language (French, German, Japanese and Spanish), Health Science, Home Economics, Life Science, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physical Science and Social Science.
Although the Multiple Subjects credential allows you to teach all subjects at all grade levels, teachers with a Multiple Subjects credential usually teach in elementary school. Subject matter for the Multiple Subjects credential may be met through a program of coursework in Liberal Studies or by taking the Multiple Subjects Assessment for Teachers (MSAT) exam. CSULB offers CCTC-approved programs leading to a Multiple Subjects credential with an emphasis in Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) or to a Multiple Subjects credential with an emphasis in Bilingual Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD).
Refer to the appropriate College of Education academic department for information about general credential requirements, completion requirements, regulations, pending changes and new legislation.
