Chris Miles - Interim Dean

Currently serving as Interim Dean of the College of the Arts at California State University Long Beach, Christopher Miles is formerly the Director of the CSULB School or Art, and previously served as Interim Associate Dean of the College as well as Associate Chair and Graduate Advisor for the CSULB Department of Art. Chris completed his BA at the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara, and his MFA at the School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California.  He is recipient of a 2004 Penny McCall Award for his work as a writer/curator, and was one of three curators of the Hammer Museum’s survey exhibition Thing: New Sculpture from Los Angeles, which received a 2005 award for “Best Thematic Exhibition Nationally” from AICA/USA, the United States chapter of the International Association of Art Critics. 

At CSULB, Chris worked extensively with graduate students in both the MFA Studio Art program and the MA Art History program, and taught both in studio art areas and in art history, focusing on contemporary art, and art theory and criticism. Chris also has taught at Art Center College of Design, the Claremont Graduate University, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and the University of Southern California.  He writes regularly for Artforum, and the L.A. Weekly, and his writings also have appeared in Art & Auction, Art Lies, Art Nexus, Art Papers, artext, Artweek, dart, Flash Art, Flaunt, Frieze, The Los Angeles Times, TATE ETC., Tema Celeste, X-Tra and other publications. 

Chris has served on panels and lectured at many venues in the United States, and in 2008 visited China, where he lectured on Los Angeles art, and on art criticism in a shifting global context, at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Chris’ other curatorial credits include One Wall, a 2001 exhibition of video work by seven Los Angeles area artists at the Orange County Museum of Art, and Conceptuesque and Crazy for You--both video and film programs curated for the 2002 LA Freewaves festival.  In 2006, Chris was one in a group of curators for New Territories: Cityscapes, an international presentation of work by emerging artists at the the ARCOmadrid International Contemporary Art Fair, and also curated OMAGE: Artists, Designers and Writers of Otis College of Art and Design at Track 16 Gallery, Santa Monica, CA, and Bay Area Currents, a survey of work by emerging artists in the area, at the not-for-profit Oakland Art Gallery. 

He is essayist for a book, published by the Hammer Museum, chronicling ten years of Hammer Projects exhibitions.  Among his recent projects are a series of ceramic sculptures, and a curatorial project, co-organized with Kris Kiramitsu, including a special Los Angeles section of the ARCOmadrid International Contemporary Art Fair and a group of exhibitions at venues around the city of Madrid which took place in 2010.
