Leadership and Diversity links students to the College of Engineering student organizations such as the American Indian science Engineering Society (AISES), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the society of Women Engineers (SWE), which provide mentors, guest speakers and offer industry tours. Becoming involved in these organizations provides students valuable connections and networks to upperclassmen, industry mentors, and faculty advisors. To become involved, please contact the AESB or student organizations individually to find their meeting times, upcoming events, and mentorship opportunities.
In the Leadership and Diversity office, retention coordinators are available to discuss students’ personal and academic obstacles to provide support for students in a variety of areas. These coordinators guide students to the available resources including available tutoring, academic advising, and campus services such as Counseling and Psychological Services. Contact or visit the office to schedule a meeting.
Leadership and Diversity also manages the MESA Engineering Program (MEP) at CSULB, designed to serve engineering’s underrepresented minority students. MEP is a non-remedial, comprehensive recruitment and retention program that supports educationally disadvantaged students to attain four-year degrees in engineering or computer science through updates on upcoming opportunities, referrals, academic and professional workshops, and personal advising. For more information visit MESA Engineering Program. or visit the MEP office in EN-2 302D to apply.
The Ralph M. Parsons Summer Institute is a one week residential orientation for first-year entering underrepresented engineering students that have been accepted to CSULB. The RMP targets high potential students who have a 3.0 high school GPA and above, shown an invested interest in engineering, and willing to commit to a rigorous engineering pathway at CSULB. The program for RMP students is the beginning of the leadership development process.
