Cooling Tower

Cooling Tower. This experiment exposes students to combined heat and mass transfer. As the incoming air is cooled, heat is transferred from the warm water to the air, and some amount of liquid water is evaporated. Structured or random packing columns can be studied.

Fluidized Bed

Fluidized Bed. Fluidization phenomenon of alumina and silica particles by air can be studied. This involves both fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Correlations are invoked for the data analysis.

Convective Heat Transfer

Convective Heat Transfer. Students analyze the factors governing heat transfer from various geometries. Air is flowed across heated surfaces: simple flat surface, fins, and an array of columns. Convective heat transfer coefficients are determined.

Tank Efflux

Tank Efflux. Very simple apparatus is used to study the Bernoulli equation. Liquid (water or glycerol) is made to drain from the tank through pipes of various lengths and diameters. Students start with the Bernoulli equation to develop mathematical models that best match the experimentally measured tank draining times.

Othmer Still for Azeotropic Distillation. Binary mixture is studied for students to observe the azeotrope. The T-x-y phase diagram can be experimentally measured, and then compared with thermodynamic models or simulated with PRO/II.
