Advancement to Candidacy

Please review the "Advancement to Candidacy" section in the CSULB Catalog.

File the Advancement to Candidacy through the Graduate Advisor. Once advanced, any changes to the approved coursework listed on the advancement to candidacy must have an approval of the graduate advisor. A student must submit a Change of Program request indicating the change(s).

Requirements for the Award of Master of Science in Civil Engineering

Please review the "Requirements" section in the CSULB Catalog.

A student must be enrolled in graduation semester. A student who has completed all coursework may enroll in Graduate Studies (GS 700) course through the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE).

Preparing for Thesis

Directed Studies

A student must register for 3 units of CE 697. A student must have been advanced to candidacy in order to register for CE 697.

A completed independent study agreement form must be presented to the Graduate Advisor who will give the permission to register in CE 697. The form must be signed by both the student and the CE 697 instructor who is a tenured/tenured track faculty specializing in the studentís area of concentration.

The CE 697 report should follow the format and guidelines used for preparing a thesis manuscript. Please consult the Thesis and Dissertation Office for formatting guidelines.

Comprehensive Exam

The comprehensive examination is another option for meeting the requirements for Master of Science in Civil Engineering. The comprehensive examination aims to assess a studentís mastery of the subject matter. A student will be tested in four classes selected by the Department and needs to pass at least three out of the four classes tested in order to satisfy the requirements for the comprehensive examination.

Requirements for Comprehensive Exam

  1. Must be currently enrolled. A student who has completed all coursework may enroll in Graduate Studies (GS 700) course through the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE).
  2. Must be in good standing with cumulative GPA of 3.0.

A student must file a Request for Comprehensive Exam by the deadline and be present on the scheduled exam date as follows:

Spring February 15 1st Saturday of May, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Deadline to File for Graduation

A student who is ready to graduate must file for graduation in order to be awarded a Master of Science in Civil Engineering Degree from CSULB.

through March 1
Spring Preceding May 1
through October 15
Summer Preceding May 1
through October 15

All degree requirements must be completed within seven years.
