Students Tour STAPLES Center
The newest batch of CSULB Sport Management students took in class last week at the "Sports and Entertainment Center of the World," the STAPLES Center. The students were given a complete tour of the venue by CSULB Sport Management alum Devon Murray, a current STAPLES Center Event Manager. Murray, a graduate of the program in 2006, was proud to give the tour as "these types of [tours] helped me when I was in the program."
After the tour, the students were invited to watch the Los Angeles Sparks clinch a playoff spot with a victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars in one of STAPLES Center's luxury suites. The General Manager of the Sparks, Penny Toler, was on hand to talk to the class about the day-to-day challenges of being the general manager of the Sparks. Toler, who led an animated discussion, is a member of the CSULB Sport Management Advisory Committee and also spoke at the program's annual Luncheon in January.
Manager of Student Affairs and Sparks season-ticket holder, Diane Higgs, appreciates when those connected to the program give back commenting that "the fact that Devon and Penny took time out of their day to impart their knowledge is encouraging because it shows that our program is slowly but surely branching out into all corners of the local sport industry."
The students took the trip in conjunction with their Foundations in Sport Management class, taught by Cindy Jarvis.

Long Beach State Sport Management,
Panel Presentation at the 8th Annual Luncheon
Report for Website (Michele Himmelberg)
Posted by admin February 2009
In a down economy, experts advise education and preparing for the next wave of opportunities
The sports industry cannot escape the realities of an ailing economy: Companies are shutting down across the nation and hundreds of layoffs are announced daily. Job seekers need to be realistic in these lean times, but they should not despair, said a panel of experts who spoke at the Long Beach State Sport Management annual luncheon on Friday, Jan. 30.
One of the best things a job seeker can do in a down business cycle is to improve their skills and take a shot at enhancing their education, the experts said. Their advice is backed up by numbers at the Long Beach State Sport Management Program, where inquiries about enrollment are up 20 percent.
Passion is a tremendous asset for any job seeker, but you need more than that to compete, said Andy Roeser, president of the Los Angeles Clippers.
“If you like basketball, that’s great – go buy a ticket to the game,” said Roeser, who talks to lots of job applicants. “We have issues right now and we need solutions. I want people who can solve problems and help make the franchise better.”
With fans holding onto their precious dollars, attendance for the Clippers is down 6 percent, Roeser said.
The Los Angeles Sparks, who play in the WBNA, are looking at creative ways to cut costs in this down cycle, said Penny Toler, general manager of the women’s basketball franchise. She and her staff can’t use the old playbook anymore to attract sponsors and fans.
“The bottom line is that people love sports,” Toler said. “We have to help them find a way to be part of the game.”
Tim Mead, vice president of Communications with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, frequently encourages students to learn to “sell themselves.” Now is not the time to scale back your efforts, he said.
“Meet as many people as you can,” Mead said. “It’s opportunity and timing. Some (teams) are going to scale back their staffs a little too much – and you could be there when they suddenly need someone. Continue to be aggressive.”
Marketing the Anaheim Ducks and the Honda Center in Anaheim is a big job that requires a skilled team of professionals. Bob Wagner, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, leads that team.
“We have to find ways to do it better, smarter and more efficiently in tough times,” Wagner said. “Education is a very good tool, but our team also works at it every day.”
The panel agreed that those who excel in the sports industry, now and in the future, are those who rely on their work ethic, skills and education to find alternative solutions for success.
-Stacy Embretson has joined the staff of the Los Angeles Marathon. Embretson will be director of operations. Embretson previously worked for the Long Beach Marathon and U.S. Road Sports.
Patrick McClenahan: CSULB Graduate Program in Sport Management, Advisory Committee Member
Patrick McClenahan has been promoted to President and General Manager of KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV, the CBS-owned stations in Los Angeles announced today Tom Kane, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Television Stations.
At the same time, Don Corsini, who has overseen the duopoly since May 2002, will step down from the post at the end of the year, after the completion of the transition of leadership.
“Don has been extremely effective in bringing KCBS and KCAL together under one roof, creating one of the industry’s most successful duopolies,” said Kane. “We appreciate his years of service, and are fortunate to have the kind of deep bench that enables us to name a successor with tremendous experience in the marketplace and at CBS.”
“In Patrick, we have one of the brightest, most creative executives in our group,” Kane continued. “He’s a native Southern Californian who knows these stations and the community very well, and has earned the trust and respect of everyone at KCBS and KCAL. I look forward to the many contributions he will make as we build on the strength of all we’ve achieved in this crucial market.”
McClenahan has served as Senior Vice President and Station Manager at CBS 2 and KCAL 9 since the stations became the largest duopoly in the nation in 2002. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities as Station Manager, McClenahan has overseen several major projects, including the merger of CBS 2 and KCAL 9’s operations, the planning and construction of the stations’ new home at the Studio City Broadcast Center, the most technologically advanced HD television facility in the country, and the negotiation of KCAL’s long-term broadcast rights agreements with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
McClenahan first joined KCAL 9 in April 1997 as Vice President and Executive Producer of Sports and was responsible for overseeing the production of more than 150 major sports broadcasts per year. Women’s Basketball’s Laurie Kelly Adds Brezya Rhodes to the Coaching Staff
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Brezya Rhodes has been hired for her first season at Northern Arizona, rounding out the coaching staff for the Lumberjack women’s basketball team. Rhodes joins sixth-year head coach Laurie Kelly’s staff after spending two years in the UCLA Athletic Department.
“We’re very excited to have Brezya join our staff,” said Kelly. “Being from California, she has a lot of West coast ties and that’s great for us. As a former Division I player herself, I know she’ll relate very well to the players. With her past work experience she brings in a lot of organizational and marketing skills that will be beneficial both in the office and in the community.”
Rhodes played for two years at Cal State Northridge before graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing. She went on to earn her Master’s in Sport Management at Long Beach State in 2006. While playing at Cal State Northridge, Rhodes was a two-time team captain, earned postseason honors in the Big West Conference and was the team’s second-leading scorer as a senior.
Prior to playing at Cal State Northridge, Rhodes was a first team all state selection at San Jose City College where she helped lead the team to a 57-9 record over two seasons.
“I am thrilled to be a part of NAU women's basketball,” said Rhodes. “It’s a program perfectly positioned to do great things in the Big Sky Conference. I believe in fundamentals, discipline and effort, and I look forward to working under Coach Kelly and helping build on the tradition of success she has established here.”
Along with her full-time position at UCLA, Rhodes has been an assistant coach at Brentwood High School in Los Angeles. During her time at UCLA, Rhodes coordinated the main operations of “First to 100,” a year-long NCAA Championship celebration for the Bruins, and served as the NCAA/Pac-10 liaison for the Senior Women’s Administrator. Since 2003, Rhodes has also been involved with the women’s basketball camps and clinics at UCLA.
After completing her degree at Cal State Northridge, Rhodes spent a year as the marketing and promotions coordinator in the athletic department, and helped increase ticket sales as well as initiate the development of a community relations program C.A.R.E.S. (CSUN Athletes – Role Models Educating Students).
Kari Duperron: Learning Team ~ 7, CSULB Graduate Program in Sport Management
Kari Duperron joined the UNLV Women's Basketball staff in May of 2008. She has previous ties to head coach Kathy Olivier, as she spent a total of four seasons on the UCLA staff beginning in the 2003-04 season as the director of basketball operations when Olivier was the Bruins' head coach. She also spent a portion of the 2006-07 season as an interim assistant coach for Olivier. At UCLA, she oversaw the administrative side of the program which included work on recruiting, marketing, and also directed the summer and winter basketball camps.
Duperron spent last season as the sophomore boys' basketball coach for North Torrance High School in Torrance, Calif., and led the team to a second place league finish, while also serving as assistant coach for the varsity team that won its first league championship since 1972.
Duperron began her collegiate career at Cal Poly as a freshman walk-on, and would finish as a three-year starting point guard. She was a two-time team captain and named the 2003 Big West Conference "Hustle Player of the Year." Duperron earned her bachelor of science degree in marketing management from Cal Poly in June of 2003, and also received a master of arts degree in Sport Management from Long Beach State in February of 2006.
"Kari is a very hard-working and dedicated coach with excellent people skills," said Olivier. "She also comes from a strong basketball family and her outstanding knowledge of the sport will be one of her greatest additions to our staff here. Having worked for me for four years before, I know that Kari's loyalty and work ethic are superb. She is really good with individual work with the players, which will be important for us this coming season."
I am pleased to announce the promotion of Richard Fernandez to Assistant Vice President - Development, Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), effective immediately. Since joining Special Olympics of Southern California in October of 2005, Richard has been instrumental to the success and growth of the LETR program which has grown from $595,000 in 2005 to the amazing sum of $900,000 that was received from the LETR Council at Summer Games in June.
Through his efforts, we’ve also seen a tremendous increase in the number of officers participating in the program, along with their level of involvement and commitment. I think the results of those efforts speak for themselves.
Rich’s new responsibilities include the development of increased online fundraising opportunities, increased/enhanced sponsorships and the recruitment of additional Law Enforcement agencies.
Please join me in congratulating Rich for a job well done.
