CSULB Setting

The hilltop portion on the 322-acre campus overlooks the Pacific Ocean.  The various colleges are housed by 80 permanent buildings, 63 academic departments and programs, 24 centers, four institutes, and four clinics.

• Please read Admissions Instructions before contacting the Graduate Advisor or Public Policy and Administration office, regarding your application or requirements.

Public Policy and University applications, both must be completed for entrance in to the University and Program.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Advancement to Candidacy forms should be filed after six units of course work, a minimum GPA of 3.0, fulfillment of the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE), and approval of candidate's program by a faculty advisor and the Director of the Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration, in all graduate work completed at this University toward the degree or program objective.

 

GRADUATE STUDENTS (Policy Statement 04-06)

1. As a requirement for advancement to candidacy for a master's or doctoral degree, all graduate students must demonstrate writing competence by:
   • Passing an approved CSULB assessment of writing competence (GWAR),
   • Having already passed an assessment of writing competence (GWAR) while matriculated at another CSU campus, or
   • Earning a CSULB-approved passing score on the writing portion of an approved standardized graduate admissions test, such as the Graduate Record Examination or the Graduate Management Aptitude Test.
2. Assessments of writing competence from non-CSU campuses will be evaluated by the GWAR Coordinator as a fulfillment of the GWAR, on an articulation basis if possible or on a case-by-case basis if necessary.
3. Students with degrees from non-CSU campuses must either provide proof of meeting the requirement with adequate scores on a CSULB-approved standardized test or attempt to satisfy the GWAR by the end of their first semester of matriculation at CSULB.

A request to Graduate Form is filed with Enrollment Services, after your have submitted your Advancement to Candidacy to the PPA department and it has been signed and approved.
