Mission, Goals, & Objectives

The mission of the Health Science Department and its undergraduate and graduate programs are to aid and encourage students' development into competent professionals and life-long learners who are responsible for community health/public health disciplines, including health education and related areas. The program fosters the development of health professionals who are person-centered and sensitive to the diverse qualities and the changing face of the health care delivery system of our society. Upon graduation, our students are able to facilitate the physical, psychological, and social well being of people individually and collectively in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic metropolitan context.

Department Goals

Within this mission, the goals of the department are to: (1) contribute to the development of a competent student body and faculty; (2) develop strong teaching and research or scholarship programs; and (3) maintain linkages with health care professionals, academic personnel, and the community at large.

Learning Objectives for the Option in Community Health Education (HSC_BS03)

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. State how the focus of public health is upon the population as opposed to the individual.
  2. Describe how epidemiologic principles and techniques are applied to the measurement of health and disease.
  3. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of data, information, and study designs.
  4. Describe the seven areas of responsibilty of the Health Educator.
  5. Describe the interface between community health education and other health professions.
  6. Formulate an evidence-based health education curriculum and test its effectiveness via an experimental or quasi-experimental design. Develop multi-cultural and culturally appropriate approaches.
  7. Conduct an empirical needs assessment in the community and analyze resulting data that have been collected.
  8. Describe alternative modes of program planning, implementation, and evaluation within specific health education settings such as the community.
  9. State how the distribution and determinants of health conditions vary in subgroups of the population (defined by age, ethnicity, gender, and other characteristics) as well as internationally.
  10. Identify socio-cultural and behavioral influences in health outcomes and discuss their similarities to and differences from biologic agents of disease.
  11. Describe alternative methods that are used internationally for the delivery and provision of health care services.
  12. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing.
  13. Define the term "health disparities" and apply fundamental models and theories of public health to health education approaches for addressing such disparities.
  14. Write a fundable research proposal.
  15. Demonstrate public health advocacy in the community and professional settings by sharing and educating those around them in the principles of public health.
