John Tansley portrait

Tell us something about the value or meaning of your CSULB experience?

I am very proud to say that I was a LBSC graduate and athlete who had the pleasure to return to CSULB as the Track and Field Head Coach.  I was on the track and field team 1957-1958 and was an assistant coach in 1959.  Afterwards I pursued my career coaching in high schools, Glendale Community College, and then returned to CSULB as the Track and Field and Cross-Country Head Coach (1990-1994).  I have won the PCAA in Cross-Country, Coach of the Year Award and then later coached at CSU Los Angeles until I retired.  I am in four “Hall of Fames.”  I have done track clinics all over the world.  In addition, I have written many articles and books on coaching Track and Field.

What is your fondest memory of LBSC?

Being on the first NCAA Track & Field team.

Did you attend any student events?  Where was your favorite hang-out on campus?

I attended most of the events such as 49er Days, Brown and Gold Day, dances, and others.   My favorite hang-out on campus was the physical education building.

How did LBSC prepare you for life after college?

After college I became a head track and field coach at two great universities.

Which professor or staff member made an impact on your academic or professional career?

Jack Rose, LBSC Track and Field Head Coach 1956-1992.

What advice would you give to a current student today?

Appreciate the work you have accomplished in obtaining your degree because a degree from CSULB can take you anywhere.
