Highlights:

  • John F. Kennedy was in office.
  • Virgil Grissom becomes second American astronaut, making 118-mile high, 303-mile long rocket flight over Atlantic.
  • Wal-Mart and Kmart both opened their doors in 1962, offering consumers virtually every household item imaginable under one roof.
  • Francis Crick and James Waterson win a Nobel Prize for their work describing the structure of DNA.
  • AT&T instroduces the T1 wideband phone line.
  • U.S. astronaut John Glenn orbits the Earth three times, becoming the first American in orbit.
  • Jackie Robinson becomes the First African-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • Tony Bennett recorded his signature mega-hit "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
  • The Jetsons, a wildly popular Hanna-Barbera cartoon premiered on ABC in September.
  • The New York Mets set a major-league record with 120 losses.
  • Cesar Chavez starts the National Farm Workers Association in Fresno, California.
  • Johnny Carson takes over as host of NBC-TV's The Tonight Show.
  • The U.S. Post Office introduces the Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP), which will add a five-digit code to all domestic addresses.
